Using the combined family edition
The family edition keeps all 36 weeks of Grades 1 and 2 in one book, with both subjects. It is an alternative to the four Grade 1 and Grade 2 books. Choose it below and week pages show its week and page numbers.
Where the standards are
- Each book has a Standards checklist with Introduced, Practiced and Demonstrated boxes. It saves on this device and prints. The grade pages show how many targets are marked.
- Every week page has a Standards band under its title. With a grade chosen it shows only that grade.
- Every book page lists its lessons with their standards and links straight to the history reading, or to the Try it lab and science reading.
CPA tip. I Can wording is paraphrased from the CPA I Can checklist. Mark each target from the child’s actual work. A completed page is not automatic mastery. Broad category targets may need evidence from several lessons. The school checklist and your teacher remain the authority for reporting.
How a lesson page works
Choose your grade first. The home page then shows each child’s next lesson in each book, and week pages lead with your lesson number, your book’s page numbers and your grade’s standards.
Kindergarten has its own week pages. Each one opens the week’s short pages from the book. Tap Play and the page reads each step aloud while the step lights up. A “For the grown-up” box holds the big idea, words, talk questions, safety notes and standards. Mark the week with “We did this week”.
For Grade 1 and Grade 2, every lesson in your book has a matching page here. Its lesson number is at the top. (The pages follow the family edition’s 36 weeks, so two lessons can share one page.) Each page has six parts:
- Listen and read. Both readings are read aloud. Words light up as they are spoken, so early readers can follow along. Tap a word to replay from there.
- Try it. A small on-screen model of the week's idea. It comes after the real test in the book, never instead of it.
- Look closely. Zoom into the week's photographs, primary sources and pictures, with prompts to notice details.
- Field trip. A few hand-picked links to museums, parks and science sites. They open in a new tab.
- Checkpoint game. The week's quick check as a listening game. It works for children who are not reading yet.
- Parent corner. Materials, safety, steps, evidence lines for Grade 1 and Grade 2, and an answer key.
Library books are free with a library card through Libby/Hoopla where available; read-alouds come from official sources, and all these links need an internet connection.
A weekly rhythm
Each week in the workbook has three parts. Do them in this order, on the days that suit your family.
- 1 · Read and noticeAbout 20 minutes. Read the week’s pages in the book together. Listen again here.
- 2 · Investigate20 to 30 minutes, plus short checks. Do the real hands-on test from the book. Then try the model here.
- 3 · Record and make20 to 30 minutes. Finish the evidence page, play the checkpoint game and save one work sample.
The Planner spreads each child’s grade lessons over 3, 4 or 5 days a week and makes a calendar file. Short week? Use the “Short on time?” line in each week’s Parent corner.
Work samples for your charter or CPA
Many charter schools ask for regular work samples. Each Grade 1–2 Parent corner lists a Grade 1 and a Grade 2 evidence line, and each Kindergarten week lists its standards under “For the grown-up”. After the week's work:
- Take a photo of the workbook page or the hands-on test.
- Press Add to my portfolio on the week page. Add the photo and your child's own words (you can type what they dictate).
- Mark it independent, prompted or modeled, and add the date.
- Before your learning period meeting, export the entries and share the ones you choose.
Privacy
- No accounts, no tracking. There are no logins, ads, analytics or cookies.
- Everything stays on your device. Game stars, settings and portfolio entries are saved in this browser only. Clearing browser data removes them.
- Outside links are clearly marked. Field trips open other websites in a new tab. Those sites have their own privacy rules.
Accessibility
- Read-aloud for every reading, with adjustable speed (0.75×, 1×, 1.25×) and a big-words caption mode.
- Keyboard and touch. Every button, game and model works with Tab, Enter, Space and arrow keys, and with a finger.
- Calm motion. Use the Calm motion switch in the menu, or your device's reduce-motion setting, to turn off animation.
- Clear text. Child text is set in Andika, a font designed for beginning readers, at large sizes with strong contrast.
