For the grown-up
Each lesson takes about 15 to 20 minutes.
Big idea
Two designs can each have helpful and less helpful features.
Words
- design plan for something made
- strength what works well
- weakness what works less well
- compare look at both
Talk together
- What was good about each bumper?
- What was hard about each?
- Which test supports that?
Get ready
- Same low ramp and ball, stiff cardboard angled bumper and soft cloth bumper; identical target.
Safety
- Roll a soft ball on a clear floor away from stairs, doors and people; never throw it. Short strings stay on the table, never around a body.
- Only a grown-up uses scissors or cuts cardboard. Keep small pieces out of mouths; use large cards.

How to help
Let your child listen, look and try before you explain. Point to the next picture if needed. Accept drawing, pointing or a voice response; writing is optional. Save the child’s own work with a date.
