Talk together

  • Where did this root grow?
  • What changed near the tree?
  • How does a root help the plant?

Get ready

  • Photo of lifted pavement and roots; tree-shade photo, crayons; optional safe walk on level pavement.

Safety

  • A grown-up chooses a safe accessible route and stays close; hold hands near streets. Stay away from traffic, wildlife, unknown plants and standing water; use photos indoors if needed.
  • A grown-up stays close. Never look at the Sun; use hats, sunscreen and shade breaks. The adult checks surfaces first; do not touch anything hot.
  • Only a grown-up uses scissors or cuts cardboard. Keep small pieces out of mouths; use large cards.

How to help

Let your child listen, look and try before you explain. Point to the next picture if needed. Accept drawing, pointing or a voice response; writing is optional. Save the child’s own work with a date.
